The 2010 Port Charlotte Whiskey MRC: 01 is a limited edition, only 8000 bottles for the World. For this whiskey, aging is 50% bourbon cask of first filling, 50% cask of French wine of second filling. Then it is assembled and put in barrels of great Bordeaux wines (MRC = Mouton Rothschild Casks). At the tasting the smoked is always very present, but the spicy comes immediately with the vanilla counterbalance the first medicinal aspect.
His character is bright, sunny, pink. It is a wonderful experience and a superb combination of French oak loaded with fruit, strong peat smoke and ripening of Islay.
You will meet in the nose, initially, an extravagance of summer fruits and peat smoke. Raspberries and cherries, with Turkish delights and steaming driftwood embers, gush out of the glass that is screwed up to attract attention. At the opening of the whiskey, you will find Islay sea breeze, ozone and salty. The oak, American and French, gives a real depth, vanilla, toast, chocolate, roasted coffee beans, licorice, walnuts and almond. Every time you come back to the glass, there seems to be a bubble of red berries and ripe plums bursting under your nose.
On the palate, Certainly warming to 59.2%, lively and sweet with icing sugar and marshmallow, bound in the smoke. There is a hurry to capture everything that happens. The sweet red fruits and peat smoke dissolve slightly when the oak's power is expressed with tobacco leaf and toasty oak. Maple syrup, pecans and coffee are complemented by notes of orange and peach. There is a complexity that did not seem possible at the first sip. Returning to the glass, this first taste spurt has become a more complete experience. There is now salt spray, dry smoke and oak, raspberries and plums combined with vanilla and butterscotch.
On arrival, the peat smoke is a little more medicinal than normal, think of bandages and creosote. The dryness of the oak testifies to the roasting of the French and the tank of the American and the final combination in French oak upscale. The influence of extra maturation in sumptuous first growth casks has added a layer of fruit that makes its way through the smoke to the heart of the whiskey. The spirit is viscous and textured, allowing for a long finish where creamy vanilla, spicy clove and ripe peach disappear from powerful peat smoke and end on their own, leaving Port Charlotte's DNA firmly in place. square.
